The Fix is for all the musicians, artists, dancers, grown folks and true appreciators of dope music. Music binds us all and we hope you'll come share in the evening. Our new home The Someday Lounge is a smoke free venue with an incredible sound system, supreme staff, and perfect central location in Old Town. Formed in October of 2005, the Ben Darwish Trio is a an acoustic piano trio. Armed with a razor-sharp groove and an inquenchable taste for melody, they are reinventing piano jazz. Their funk-infused, improvisationally driven music offers something truly fresh and original to the Northwest music scene. Recently signed to Diatic Records, the Trio will release their first album, Industrial Hero, in December 2006.
The WHAT CHEER? BRIGADE is a rowdy misfit 19-piece roving brass band from Providence, RI. It's a mobile party with a taste of Bollywood, the Balkans, New Orleans, Samba, and Hip Hop. With no singer and zero amplification, some call the band's sound Luddite Hardcore--proof that loud music doesn't need electricity.
The Brigade defies categorization, appealing equally to punks and farmers, old and young. The group is a raucous live experience, not easily captured on recording. Until you are face to face with a very excitable monkey-man on drums, with trumpets blasting just a few feet away, you have yet to experience the atrocity that is the What Cheer? Brigade.
Blue Skies For Black Hearts Kluster music review 3/19/08: This cracking album elicits equal measures of sympathy and sonic satisfaction. While the narratives are of forlorn, loveless, exasperating lives, the music radiates with shimmering guitars, resilient hooks and melodies shining throughout. The lyrics come drenched with a drunken self-depreciating stench of hopelessness, yet you get an inkling that the pain is poured out into the songs. This is real, everyday emotion distilled across many long nights of empty bottles and endlessly-strummed guitar strings.
Nick Caceres is a young singer-songwriter, with a voice directly inspired by hours of deep thought and imaginative contemplation. Like the train rolling over the hills on the cover of his debut EP "Hours of Life", Nick's music comes from a place far off and long lost, existing somewhere deep inside us all in an archetypal fashion. By bringing forth such a style of music in this manner, his songs serve as a counterpoint to the high-speed, high-tech, and often highly stressful world we're living in today-
"Just when I think all the great music and lyrics have manifested themselves and the end of the world is near, Nick appears.....Beautiful Music! Beautiful!" -Gerard (KBCrecords.com)
An Eclectic night of experimental music featuring solo acts, duos and full bands. Colt Vista will headline with their epic instrumental rock music. Supported by the Gay Deceivers, who' s lo-fi aesthetic recalls Raincoats-style punk or early K Records. Tom Filepp(Cars and Trains) performs a wide array of sounds: layered programmed and sequenced drums, walls of synths, samples, and strings and Ilyas Ahmed and Grouper combine forces to form Guest and perform experimental folk masterpieces.
Experimental to conventional theatrical and musical performers shall each have their moment to woo the audience and wow the world. The stage is open to vanity and variety, to the ethereal and the edgy. Boldness and brazenness is encouraged to take the stage. Adaptations, permutations, accelerations, and a diverse range of thrills, chills and spills nurtured in the recesses and corners shall be stripped from their crevices to razzle dazzle. Bring something provocative....reveal your creative efforts by candlelight or by stage light....reveal and revel in hatching your visions....

The result is PWRFL Power: an unconventional marriage of melodically rich, Fahey-styled acoustic virtuosity and conversational, knowingly naive lyrical abandon. With the most basic of building blocks, Nomura forges a uniquely avant-informed brand of outsider folk music--one that relies as much on impish mischief as it does on considered craft and technique.-The Stranger

Based in the Pacific Northwest, yet encompassing the world, Vagabond Opera delivers passionate offerings of Bohemian cabaret. Paris hot Jazz, gut bucket swing, Tangos, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, Klezmer and vigorous originals meet a world of riverboat gambling queens, Turkish belly dancers, and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich. Weaving elements of Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington and Edith Piaf with absurdist flair, theatrics and an old world mood, Vagabond Opera presents the new wave of opera--lusty (trained) voices singing in 11 languages and presenting a cabaret of rich musical phrasing, sparkling lyrics and indomitable stage presence, all played with exuberance, skill and a gritty Vagabond edge.
This is Opera liberated and reinvented for everyone. The Brass Menazeri is the Bay Area's premier Balkan Rom ("Gypsy") style brass band, performing hard driving music of Serbia, Macedonia & Greece.

Wildly melodic and inherently quirky, The Dimes are known for causing breakouts of unexpected hand clapping and foot stomping among fans at their shows. The Dimes have cooked up some delicious indiepop goodness on their latest release, The Silent Generation.
"Posters Fade champions Derby's signature sound of sweeping soft melodies and upbeat hooks, draped over bouncy keys, punchy guitars and a healthy dose of 50's-era drum beats. Good luck keeping this record off of your year-end lists. This one is a K.O." -Nada Mucho
Cock and Swans release of Noon Hum EP is packed with electronic beats and trance-like hums. Ola's vocals are sweet but eerie, adding to the dark sound that fills the album. The mixing is prime--just listen to Ola's vocals and the backing drums in "One Hundred." Repetitive vocals, while detracting from many songs, create a mellow atmosphere amidst the heavy drums and soft clarinet in "Holding On." Johnny jumps in with backing vocals in "Lets Go" while Ola's vocals echo around the primary mix. While the strongest songs are the ones that include vocals, instrumentals like "Make Believe Music" and "Clarinaughts" stand out distinctly and can be likened to the background music in Ryland Bouchard's The Robot Ate Me.-FencePost

If you haven't caught Tu Fawning yet...well, you should. As you'd expect from two such disparate and inimitable Portland voices like Haege (also of Portland circus rock outfit 31Knots) and Repp (longtime Hush Records solo artist), the music is unique: Spooky, rustic, traditional and futuristic all at once. Few local bands balance the delicate and jarring the way Tu Fawning does. But don't take my word for it (do-do-dooo!)-Local Cut

Maybe Aphrodesia is further proof that it's time to update the word 'afrobeat' with something else. True, the group's horn-laden polyrhythmic funk owes more than a passing glance to Fela Kuti's revolutionary 1970's blueprint, and yes, this is the same San Francisco-based crew who braved armed Nigerian border police during their 2006 pilgrimage to Lagos, Nigeria and the New Afrika Shrine-Femi Kuti's continuation of his father's legendary nightclub and the birthplace of afrobeat itself. But Aphrodesia's sound- the rich, dual female lead vocals, jazz-inflected horn section and powerful rhythm- has always encompassed much more than just afrobeat.
DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid are taking over the Someday Lounge for a night of Bollywood music. That's right, an entire evening of nothing but Filmi. With a Bollywood soundtrack collection that includes the results of many hours spent in Bombay's Chor Bazaar, and the purchase of some amazing private collections, who knows what might end up on the duo's platters? From vintage Bollywood rock'n'roll, to Bollywood funk and disco, up to today's pastiches of techno, hip-hop, and reggaeton, it's all in the mix at Filmistan.
"Waterhouse, the label that comes up as soon as you talk about folk music, brings us the young New Yorker Brittain Ashford who happens to play everything except a guitar. As a result this album that could be considered "just another folk record" takes on a special allure that could take all of our attention ... because it deserves it. The leader of the group Commodore Duchess from Seattle, the young woman surrounds herself with an arsenal of all types of instruments (dulcimer, toy piano, marxophone, autoharp) to bring an album to the world that is reminiscent of Vasthi Bunyan's early works with a voice similar to Joan Baez. Recorded in Brooklyn last winter, "There, But For You, Go I" emanates humility and simplicity in addition to being totally charming."-Benzinmag.net

We love classical music. We love playing classical music. We love listening to classical music. We are tired of the elitist and inaccessible nature of the classical world. We believe that there are many that would enjoy classical music if they could access it in a setting that is comfortable for them. We believe classical musicians should be allowed to perform in a setting that is more casual - where the audience is allowed to have a drink, eat a scone, laugh a little, and clap a lot. We believe everyone can enjoy the music that we love.
